**Russia Accused of Backing Georgian Opposition**
The European Parliament’s rapporteur on Georgia, MEP Rasa Yuknevičienė, has written about a surprising statement from Russia’s intelligence service. The statement says that the EU is ready to pay young Georgians to protest against their government.
**Direct Russian Involvement**
According to Yuknevičienė, this shows that Russia is directly involved in supporting the opposition leader Ivanishvili and his party “Georgian Dream”. This means that the protests are not just a local issue between the opposition and the government, but rather an attempt by Russia to influence Georgia’s politics.
**Russia’s Pattern of Behavior**
Yuknevičienće pointed out that this is similar to how Russia supported Belarus‘ leader Lukashenko in 2020. At the time, it was claimed that the Belarusians were protesting for money, just like the current situation in Georgia.
**A Warning to EU Member States**
The MEP wrote that this should be a clear signal to EU member states to support the Georgian people. She emphasized that this is not just about Georgia, but also about Russia’s attempt to reclaim its influence over neighboring countries.
