Russia Hits Ukraine‘s Power Plants
On November 16 and 17, Russia launched a big attack on Ukraine’s energy system. They fired over 120 missiles and 90 drones at power plants across the country.
The attack hit three of the five main thermal power plants owned by DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company. One plant is still not working. The other two damaged plants have started producing some electricity again.
DTEK reported that their equipment was badly damaged in the attack. This is the eighth time this year that Russia has targeted DTEK’s power plants.
Ukraine has had to reintroduce rolling blackouts, which mean people will have to switch off their electricity for four to eight hours at a time, several times a day.
There are fears that Russia may keep attacking Ukraine’s energy grid as winter approaches. This is because it happened before during the past winter and spring.
The International Energy Agency says Ukraine might not have enough electricity this winter. They predict a shortage of around 6 gigawatts, which is one-third of what Ukraine needs at its peak.
