After the counting of 98.74% votes in the referendum held by Moldova, 50.24% voted for the amendment of its constitution to facilitate the country’s integration with the European Union. Meanwhile, 49.76% voted no.
The referendum asked the Moldovans to express their opinion on the question “Do you support amending the constitution to allow for the Republic of Moldova’s membership in the European Union?”
On October 20, Moldova held a referendum on the constitutional question of joining the European Union, as well as presidential elections.
In the presidential election, the current proeuropean president of the nation, Maia Sandu is on top with 41.89%. Alexandr Stoianoglo is second with 26.30%. This means that the second presidential election round will be held where these two candidates face off against each other.
Maia Sandu’s response to the results was that freedom and democracy in Moldova had been attacked in a way never seen before, both the day of the election and over the past few months.
“Criminal groups, working with foreign forces hostile towards our national interests, have attacked the country with tens and tens millions of euros in lies and propaganda. They used the most shameful means to keep both our citizens and nation in uncertainty and instability,” stated President Maia Sandu.
“We have evidence that these criminals groups wanted to buy 300,000. This is a fraud on an unprecedented scale.
“Their goal was to undermine a democracy process,” she said.
