Drones Attack Oil Refinery in Russia
Last night, February 19th, a drone attack hit the Syzran Oil Refinery in Samara Oblast, Russia. According to Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, a fire broke out at the refinery. However, there were no casualties.
The Syzran Oil Refinery is located about 430 miles from the border with Ukraine. It was opened in 1942 and belongs to Rosneft, the Russian state-owned oil company.
The refinery processes 8.9 million tons of oil per year and produces fuel, aviation kerosene, and bitumen. This attack is not an isolated incident. In recent months, several Russian oil facilities have been targeted by Ukrainian drones.
Ukraine considers Russian oil refineries to be valid military targets because the profits from oil sales help fund Moscow’s war efforts. The Ukrainian military has launched repeated attacks against these facilities using long-range drones.
Since the beginning of 2025, at least 17 Russian oil facilities have been attacked by drones.
