Hungary Makes Demands on EU Sanctions
Hungary is demanding changes to the European Union‘s Russia sanctions list. The country wants eight individuals removed from the list and guarantees that Ukraine will hold talks about gas transit.
The EU has a rule that all countries must agree to renew sanctions every six months. Hungary uses this process to get what it wants. In the past, Budapest got exceptions for Moscow Patriarch Kirill and Russian oil products.
Hungary’s demand is related to Ukraine’s decision not to extend an agreement with Russia about gas transit to Europe. This means that Hungary, which imports a lot of Russian gas, will have to find another way to get its gas.
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite the war in Ukraine, Budapest and Moscow are close allies.
Ukraine wants to strengthen ties with the US by getting more favorable terms for their deal. Meanwhile, Russia says it is not winning any wars.
