US Hopes for Peace Deal After Talks with Russia
The United States is expecting a “positive announcement” following recent talks between US and Russian delegates in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The talks were held on March 24 and focused on the possibility of a ceasefire in Ukraine.
A White House source told Reuters that the talks were productive and that the US expects a positive announcement soon. A joint statement will be released by both countries on March 25, after a draft was sent to them for approval.
The US delegation was led by Andrew Peek from the National Security Council and Michael Anton from the State Department. The Russian delegation included Grigory Karasin and Sergey Beseda.
This is not the first attempt by President Trump to secure a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. However, despite previous proposals, violence has continued in Ukraine.
US Defense Minister Rustem Umerov met with Ukrainian officials in Riyadh on March 23, calling the meeting “constructive and meaningful.” Further talks are expected after initial discussions on March 23.
A White House source said that a positive announcement is expected soon. However, it’s unclear what this announcement will be or when it will happen.
The recent talks come as Ukraine continues to face attacks from Russia. The Ukrainian government has accused Russia of attacking residential areas and infrastructure facilities, including a children’s hospital.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff sparked controversy after repeating Russian propaganda narratives on Ukraine in an interview with far-right commentator Tucker Carlson.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said that Russia has managed to influence some people on the White House team through information. He also invited US Vice President JD Vance to visit Ukraine during a recent phone call.
A Russian diplomatic source told the Moscow Times that time is now playing in Russia’s favor, and the Kremlin wants to “make the most of it.”
