Trump Picks New Secretary of Defense
US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Pete Hegseth, 44, as the new Secretary of Defense. Hegseth is a TV presenter and will lead the Pentagon if confirmed.
Hegseth’s views on US involvement in Ukraine are unclear. He initially criticized Russia’s invasion but later downplayed its importance for American interests. This aligns with Trump’s “America First” policy approach, which might change US aid to Ukraine.
Trump praised Hegseth, saying he is “tough, smart, and a true believer in America First.” Hegseth has experience serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and graduated from Harvard and Princeton universities.
Hegseth previously criticized NATO allies for being weak. He said China is building a military to defeat the US. In an appearance on TV, he called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “Putin’s give-me-my-sh*t-back war.”
Trump also selected South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as the new Secretary of Homeland Security. She said US aid to Ukraine was expensive and pushed Russia toward an alliance with China.
