Michael Sfraga, US Arctic Ambassador, expressed concern over the increased joint activities between Russia and China near Alaska including coordinated bomber flights as well as coast guard operations.
Michael Sfraga (the newly appointed US Arctic Ambassador) told Reuters that the US is concerned about the increasing military cooperation between Russia, China and the Arctic region.
Both nations are pursuing their Arctic interests, which has led to increased collaboration. China, which calls itself a “near Arctic” state, wants to establish a “Polar Silk Road”, taking advantage of the receding polar glaciers. In the meantime, Russia, which is one of eight nations that have Arctic territory, is expanding its shipping capabilities in order to deliver oil and natural gas to China despite Western sanctions.
“We are vigilant and diligent in this regard.” Sfraga, a Reuters reporter, said: “We’re very closely watching this evolution of their activities.”
The ambassador referred to specific incidents that caught the attention of the US, including a joint Russian and Chinese bomber operation near Alaska last July and combined coastguard activities in Bering Strait this October.
Sfraga acknowledged that these activities took place in international waters, and that they were compliant with international law. However, it also highlighted the strategic importance of the region, highlighting Alaska’s role as NATO’s “western flank.”
The strategic importance of the Arctic goes beyond military considerations. Climate change could make it easier to access valuable minerals and fossil fuels in the region.
China maintains an official neutrality in the war in Ukraine. It advocates for peace and dialogue, while simultaneously supporting Russia via trade and technology transfer.
The US accused China providing indirect military assistance to Russia, including dual use items that can be used for both civilian and military purpose. China supplies Russia with critical components, such as microelectronics and navigation systems, drone technology, and drone technology.
The two nations also conducted several joint military exercises, including naval drills in the South China Sea. This showed a united front in opposition to NATO and Western powers.
