Europe’s patience with Georgia is running out. This is what MEP Rihards Kols said in response to Shalva Papuashvili, who was critical of the statements made by Zhigimantas Pavillionis and Marko Michelson.
Shalva Papuashvili is the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia. He said that Estonian and Lithuanian politicians tried to blackmail the EU Ambassador to Georgia over a meeting they had with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maka Bochorishvili.
MEP Kols disagreed with this statement. He said that it’s Shalva Papuashvili who is laughing at Marko Michelson and Zhigimantas Pavillionis. In fact, according to Kols, the “real betrayal” comes from within the ranks of the Georgian government.
Kols said that Europe has called for sanctions against those who are hindering Georgia’s democratic aspirations, including Shalva Papuashvili. He warned that Europe’s patience is not infinite and its tolerance for hypocrisy is limited.
The MEP also responded to Shalva Papuashvili’s claim that Baltic leaders are trying to bring about “regime change” in Georgia. Kols said this is laughable, as the real issue is the Georgian government’s deviation from democratic norms and its anti-Ukrainian messaging.
Kols concluded by saying that Europe stands with the people of Georgia, not with those who seek to undermine their democratic future. He called on Shalva Papuashvili to prove his commitment to democracy through actions, not just words.
