**Former UK PM Rishi Sunak Criticizes Donald Trump’s Treatment of Ukraine President**
Rishi Sunak, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has spoken out against US President Donald Trump’s treatment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Sunak said that it was “wrong” for Trump to have been treated that way.
The controversy began last week when a meeting between Trump and Zelensky turned explosive in the Oval Office. Sunak called the exchange “very hard to watch”. He added, “For him to have been treated that way was wrong.”
Sunak has a close relationship with Zelensky, having visited Kyiv during his time as Prime Minister. He emphasized that he agreed with Trump’s call for European countries to take more responsibility for their own defense.
“We can’t expect America to bear any burden for our security if we are not prepared to make those sacrifices ourselves,” Sunak said. He also noted that the UK needs to prepare for the possibility of the US pulling out of military support for Europe.
**US Military Aid to Ukraine Paused**
In a related development, Trump announced on Monday night that the US would be pausing military aid to Ukraine. The move came after Trump launched a fresh attack on Zelensky, claiming that he “doesn’t want there to be peace as long as he has America’s backing”.
The pause in military aid was met with concern from international leaders. A summit of mostly European leaders in London on Sunday agreed a four-point plan to guarantee Ukraine’s defense in the event of a peace deal with Russia.
**UK and France Working on European-Led Solution**
The UK and France are working together to find a European-led solution to the conflict. The move is seen as an attempt to reduce differences between Western countries over Ukraine.
Sunak’s comments were made before the US announced its pause in military aid to Ukraine. His first major interview since his 2024 election defeat was with the BBC’s Political Thinking with Nick Robinson.
