**US Senator Elected Chairman of Helsinki Commission**
Republican Senator Roger Wicker has been chosen to lead the United States Helsinki Commission. The commission made this announcement in a statement.
Senator Wicker is happy about his new role. He said that European security benefits the US and that the commission has helped protect human rights, promote democracy, and boost economic cooperation worldwide for nearly 50 years. He wants to work with other lawmakers to stop Russia’s war on Ukraine, strengthen NATO, and ensure the US’ interests are protected.
The commission also mentioned concerns about Georgia‘s democracy. They believe that the country is at a crossroads as it decides whether to follow its path towards European integration or move closer to Russia.
Note: The chairmen of the Helsinki Commission take turns every two years. Republican Congressman Joe Wilson, who previously held this position, has been made co-chairman of the commission.
