Rolling Blackouts in Transnistria
The region of Transnistria has implemented rolling blackouts. This means that electricity will be turned off for a few hours each day.
The reason is that Russia stopped sending gas to the area on January 1st. As a result, many people are without heating or hot water.
To try and solve this problem, Moldovan authorities have started importing electricity from elsewhere.
The leader of Transnistria, Vadim Krasnoselsky, said that rolling blackouts were necessary to save the power system. However, he rejected an offer for gas from Europe.
Transnistria has been controlled by Russia since the 1990s and claims it is independent from Moldova.
