**US Backtracks on Foreign Aid Freeze**
The US has backed down from a near-total freeze of foreign aid, allowing “life-saving humanitarian assistance” to continue. This change was announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in memos sent to aid organizations.
**What’s happening?**
Last year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending all foreign aid programs for 90 days. The move was meant to review and ensure that aid aligned with “American interests” and “American values.”
**Who is affected?**
In Ukraine, many humanitarian services are provided by organizations that will now be allowed to continue their work. These include counseling, cultural events, and basic services for vulnerable segments of society.
**What’s not covered?**
The waiver does not cover non-life-saving assistance, such as abortions, family planning conferences, transgender surgeries, and other similar programs.
**Ukraine responds**
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ordered a report on US-funded projects in Ukraine that were affected by the freeze. He has also promised to find alternative funding for priority areas, including support for Ukrainian children, veterans, and infrastructure.
