For some families, the long wait is over. The BBC was present as freed Ukrainians were reunited with their loved ones at a location in northern Ukraine. Alina was waiting for her husband Oleksandr, who was captured while defending Mariupol in 2022. She had tears streaming down her face before his arrival.

“I have so many emotions,” she said. “It’s been so difficult. I just want see him.”

Released prisoner Anatoliy said he was “overwhelmed by feelings” after being captive for over two years. “Thank God this day has come. We’re home. Now we’re going to Ukraine with everything we’ve got,” he said.

**Details of the Exchange**

This is the 59th prisoner exchange since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The Ukrainian side released soldiers, border guards, National Guardsmen, and Navy servicemen, many of whom had been held captive for more than two-and-a-half years.

Russian forces handed over an equal number of Russian troops to Ukraine. Many of the released prisoners have serious illnesses and injuries.

Over 8,000 Ukrainians are still being held captive in Russia and occupied parts of Ukraine. Ukrainian say about prisoner exchanges have become more difficult in recent months.

**Reaction from Leaders**

Ukrainian President Zelensky said 189 Ukrainians had returned home. He praised the UAE for its efforts to facilitate the exchange. “We are working to free everyone from Russian captivity. This is our goal. We do not forget anyone,” he said.
