**Russian Cargo Ship Sinks in Mediterranean**
A Russian cargo ship called the Ursa Major sank in the Mediterranean Sea on December 23. The ship was owned by Oboronlogistika, a company linked to Russia‘s Defense Ministry.
According to Oboronlogistika, three explosions caused the ship to sink. The company said that the blasts happened near the back of the ship and made it list heavily to one side. The explosions also damaged the deck and created holes in the ship.
**Crew Testifies to Explosions**
The crew members who survived the sinking told Oboronlogistika that three consecutive explosions occurred on the starboard side (the right-hand side) of the ship at 13:50 Moscow time. The blasts caused significant damage, including a large hole and shrapnel covering the deck.
**Cargo Ship Details**
Oboronlogistika said that the Ursa Major was not carrying too much cargo when it sank. The ship had a maximum capacity of 9,500 tons and was carrying various equipment, including two portal cranes, empty containers, and other machinery.
**Rescue Efforts**
Fourteen crew members were rescued by a Russian military vessel and taken to the Spanish port of Cartagena. Two crew members are still missing. The rescue efforts involved several ships, and Spain’s Maritime Rescue Service received a distress signal when the ship was about 57 miles off the coast of Almeria.
