**Russia Launches Ballistic Missile Attack on Odesa Port, Killing One and Injuring Eight**
On May 23, Russia fired two ballistic missiles at the southern port city of Odesa in Ukraine, resulting in one death and eight injuries. According to Oleh Kiper, the governor of Odesa Oblast, four of those wounded are in serious condition.
The strike hit civilian infrastructure inside the port, causing significant damage to buildings and equipment. The engine room was damaged, windows were shattered, and multiple pieces of equipment were destroyed. This attack is a stark reminder of Russia’s disregard for civilian life and infrastructure.
“It was a normal working day in a normal Ukrainian port,” wrote Oleksiy Kuleba, the minister for development of communities, territories, and infrastructure, on Facebook. “There was not a single military facility, only civilian infrastructure. Russia has once again attacked a peaceful, strategically important facility that is vital for the world’s food security.”
**The Attack: A Clear Violation of Ceasefire**
This attack comes at a time when Ukraine has accepted a 30-day unconditional ceasefire proposed by the US, but refused by Moscow. Despite this, Russian forces have continued to launch strikes across Ukraine.
Odesa, a critical Black Sea port near Moldova and Romania, is essential for global trade and the export of Ukrainian grain. The city’s ports have been repeatedly targeted since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
**The Human Cost**
According to Kuleba, nearly 400 pieces of port infrastructure and over 30 ships have been damaged or destroyed by Russian attacks since February 2022. A total of 106 civilians have been injured in strikes against port facilities.
“This attack is a stark reminder of Russia’s disregard for human life and the importance of securing Ukraine’s ports,” said Kuleba. “We urge international partners to take immediate action to support Ukraine’s efforts to secure its ports and prevent further attacks.”
