Russian troops have increased their use and production of Shahed drones. Ivan Varchenko, a national security expert, suggests that this change could indicate a buildup of missiles for a mass strike in the future. Russian forces are intensifying their daily attacks and testing Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
Recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities have intensified with the use of Iranian-made Shahed drones. According to Ivan Varchenko of FREEDOM, such attacks suggest that the occupiers are able to produce these drones.
The Russian aerial assaults against Ukraine have intensified in recent years, especially with the increased deployment of Shahed Drones. In October 2024, Russia launched 2,023 drones against Ukraine, and Ukrainian forces intercepted 1,185 of them.
The Russians may be stockpiling missiles in preparation for future massive attacks, as the number of drone strikes has increased.
“Russia is increasing the number of its attacks on Ukrainian territory, mostly with Shaheds. We can conclude that they have set up their own production, and are now increasing the numbers of Shaheds launched. In September, 40-45 Shaheds on average were launched each day. In October, the number of launches increased to 70. In November, the number continues to increase.
Experts pointed out that the Russians are using missiles less frequently since nearly two months. Moscow troops may be accumulating missiles in order to use them on a “convenient day” for the occupiers.
What could that day be like? When the Russians decide that the strikes are most effective. We must be ready for a mass strike every day,” Varchenko added.
Experts said that Russia is now launching dozens if not hundreds of Shaheds per day against Ukraine. They are trying to weaken Ukraine’s missile and air defence systems. They are, to some extent, succeeding.
“Does it have a negative impact on the operation of Ukraine’s Air Defense? It is primarily a military analysis, but we know that the Ukrainians have found cheaper ways to counter Shaheds in 2022-2023. It is not just the expensive air defense systems or missiles, but also concentrated small-arms fire and other tools. We will be able repel any attacks that Russia may plan with the arrival of cold weather if our partners are ready to provide us the right weapons.
