The city’s residents, including the hundreds of thousands of war refugees, are in increasingly desperate situations as food supplies are strained and winter approaches.
According to BILD, Russian occupiers are targeting supermarkets in Kharkiv. This will further complicate the lives of city residents.
As of autumn 2024 the humanitarian situation in Kharkiv will remain dire. There will be ongoing violence, and there will be significant civilian casualties as a result of Russian attacks. Over the past week, local authorities reported that at least 51 people in Kharkiv as well as the surrounding area were injured by Russian shelling. Between 4 and 10 Novembre, four people were killed by attacks on the Kupiansk District. Two children were also injured by an explosive device at the Barvinkove neighborhood.
Bjorn Stritzel of BILD, who visited the town, reported that Russian forces had previously targeted thermal power stations to deny Ukrainians light and warmth during the winter, but have now shifted focus.
The journalist said, “Now the Russians are attacking supermarkets in order to make life as difficult as possible for the remaining 1 million Kharkiv residents including 200,000 displaced people.”
The problem of broken windows caused by Russian strikes is becoming more acute with the arrival of cold weather. Maksym Psin, deputy director of KharkivSpetsBud, said that a recent missile attack shattered nearly 800 windows in one attack.
He said that all broken windows are repaired within a single day. “If not, thousands of people will have to leave their homes following an attack.”
According to the Kharkiv City Council alone, missile and glide-bomb strikes in the last two months have damaged 4,500 buildings.
