Russia May Launch New Missile at Ukraine Again
Russia is planning to launch its new Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) against Ukraine, according to a report by the Associated Press. The US official made this statement on December 11.
This would be the second time Russia uses the Oreshnik missile in Ukraine. On November 21, Russia launched one at Dnipro in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin said this was in response to Ukraine using American and British weapons to target deeper within Russia.
The US sees the Oreshnik missile as a way for Russia to intimidate rather than a game-changer on the battlefield in Ukraine. The missile is likely not new but a modification of an older model, according to Fabian Hoffmann, a defense expert at the University of Oslo.
Russia only has a few Oreshnik missiles, and they carry smaller warheads than other missiles that Russia regularly launches at Ukraine. This could be part of a staged stunt designed to scare off the West, according to reports by The Moscow Times.
