Krasnohorivka is a town located in eastern Ukraine‘s Donetsk Oblast. It has been a strategic goal due to its proximity with the city of Donetsk which is controlled and governed by Russia.
The town, which had a population of around 16,000 before 2014, has been the scene of intense fighting and frequent bombardment since 2014; there have also been renewed battles over the past few years as part of Russia’s full-scale invasion in Ukraine. The Russian military needs to control Krasnohorivka in order to gain or retain territory in the Donbas Oblast.
Russia has also been actively engaged in fighting in the Pokrovsk area to capture the nearby Avdiivka city and expand its control over western Donetsk Oblast.
