Russian troops trying to cross into Ukraine are not making progress.
According to Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, Russian infantry units have been attempting to storm the Russia-Ukraine border in Sumy Oblast. However, they have not been able to break through and fighting is ongoing.
The situation is being closely monitored by groups like DeepState, who have marked a village on the Ukrainian side of the border as a contested area. This suggests that Russian forces may have crossed into Ukraine.
Kovalenko made his comments on Telegram, saying “Russian forces are attempting to storm the border in infantry groups without vehicle columns.” He also stated that there has been no breakthrough at this time and fighting continues.
The Kyiv Independent could not verify these claims. The Operational Tactical Group Siversk spokesperson, Vadym Mysnyk, declined to comment on the situation.
There have been previous battles between Russian and Ukrainian forces in the region. In August 2024, Ukraine launched a surprise attack into Russia’s Kursk Oblast. Although Russian troops regained control of most of the territory, they suffered significant losses. According to Ukraine’s General Staff, nearly 40,000 Russian soldiers were injured or killed, including over 16,000 who died.
