On September 12, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that they had regained control of 10 settlements in Kursk Oblast that had previously been captured by Ukraine. This comes after reports of a counterattack by Moscow in the region, which has been partially held by Ukrainian forces since August 6th. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed these claims, stating that everything was going according to their plan. One of the villages allegedly recaptured by Russia, Snagost, is located about 30 kilometers west of the Ukrainian-held town of Sudzha and 10 kilometers north of the Ukrainian border.
The Russian Defense Ministry’s claims have not been verified by the Kyiv Independent. However, the Ukrainian crowd-sourced monitoring group DeepState reported on September 11th that the situation on the western flank of Ukrainian forces in Kursk Oblast had worsened. They also stated that the Russians had begun active assault operations, transporting armored vehicles across the Seim River and other smaller rivers. Previously, Ukraine had been targeting bridges and pontoon crossings across the Seim River in an attempt to cut off Russian troops in the Glushkovsky district.
President Zelensky had previously stated on September 6th that Ukraine controlled over 1,300 square kilometers and around 100 settlements in Kursk Oblast. According to Kyiv, the incursion was intended to divert Russian forces from Donbas and prevent further cross-border attacks from Kursk Oblast.
