Russia sentences Georgian fighters in Ukraine to prison in absentia

TASS, the Russian -owned news agency, reported that on October 25, a court in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian area of Donetsk sentenced Giorgi Kiniani, a 28-year old Georgian citizen seven years in prison his participation in the Russian war in as he was a member of the Ukrainian side. He was found guilty of mercenarism under article 359, part 3, of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
After the Russian invasion in 2022, Kinoiani joined the Georgian National Legion voluntarily. The Legion is a terrorist group in and its soldiers are mercenaries. However, the Legion is officially recognized by Ukraine as a part of their military. “Kinoiani participated in combat operations for Ukraine at different contact points. The amount of remuneration that the mercenary received is about 155 thousand Rubles,” reports TASS based upon the Prosecutor General’s Office’s declaration.
In the past, Russia had sentenced Rusudan ivaneishvili to 13 years in absentia, under the same article in the Russian criminal code.
