On the night of October 6, 2024, Ukraine‘s air defenses were put to the test as Russian forces launched a massive air assault. The attack, which began at 7:00 PM on October 5, involved over 90 aerial weapons and targeted multiple regions across the country. As of 7:00 AM on October 6, four explosive drones were still in the air, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
This is just one of many daily air attacks by Russia on residential areas in Ukraine, with the intention of terrorizing civilians and damaging civilian infrastructure. The Russian forces often use Shahed long-range “kamikaze” drones and have recently increased their use of guided bomb strikes on residential neighborhoods in Ukrainian cities.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, their radio-technical troops detected and tracked more than 90 Russian air attack means, including ballistic and cruise missiles, guided air-launched missiles, and drones. The drones were launched from various locations in Russia, including Orel, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and Kursk.
Ukrainian defense forces, including aviation, air defense missile troops, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups, successfully intercepted 56 drones and two missiles. These interceptions took place in 14 different regions of Ukraine, including Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kyiv, and Kharkiv.
The Air Force also reported that 25 drones were “locationally lost” in various regions of Ukraine, meaning they disappeared from radars and likely crashed due to electronic warfare countermeasures. As of 7:00 AM, four drones were still in Ukrainian airspace, with one detected in Kyiv Oblast at 10:00 AM, according to airspace monitoring channels.
Based on these figures, it is estimated that at least two missiles and two drones may have reached their targets. In Kyiv, the City Military Administration reported that Russian drones approached the capital from different directions in waves. Air raid alerts were issued three times, lasting for over five hours, but all detected drones were neutralized with no reported destruction or casualties in the city.
However, Odesa was not as fortunate. The State Emergency Service of Odesa Oblast reported that Russian forces attacked the city with drones, causing damage to civilian infrastructure such as warehouses and trucks. The attacks also resulted in fires, which were eventually extinguished. One man was seriously injured and hospitalized.
