**Russian Forces Target Historic Cathedral in Kherson**
A historic cathedral in Ukraine’s Kherson has been damaged by Russian forces. The St. Catherine’s Cathedral was targeted on December 20th, with shells hitting the building beneath its dome.
The attack occurred around 5:00 am, causing significant damage to the church‘s facade and interior. This is not the first time the cathedral has been hit by Russian attacks. In August 2023, artillery fire set the roof ablaze, injuring three people nearby.
**Historic Significance of St. Catherine’s Cathedral**
Built in 1786, St. Catherine’s Cathedral holds great historical importance as Kherson’s first stone temple. The classical-style building houses the crypt of Prince Grigory Potemkin-Tavrichesky, the founder of Kherson. The cathedral has been closed several times, including during the 1930s and 1962.
**Ukraine’s Losses Under Russian Occupation**
According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia has destroyed approximately 700 churches in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began. About 50 priests have also been killed during this time.
