On January 17, Russia launched a missile attack on the city of Kryvyi Rih in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The attack resulted in the deaths of four people and left at least three others injured.
The Ukrainian Air Force had warned of a ballistic threat earlier that day and detected a high-speed target heading towards the city. An air alert remains active in the region, with Governor Serhii Lysak urging residents to stay in shelters until it is lifted.
Kryvyi Rih is President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown and has been a frequent target of Russian missile strikes. The city has a population of approximately 660,000 and lies about 70 kilometers northwest of the nearest front-line zone.
**U.S. Assures Russia on Nuclear Weapons**
In other news, outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden assured Russian President Vladimir Putin that the United States would not deploy nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
**Drones Repelled by Ukrainian Forces**
The Ukrainian Air Force reported downing 33 out of 50 drones launched by Russia overnight, including Shahed-type attack drones. Another nine drones were lost, and one flew in the direction of Romania.

NATO has taken over some responsibilities in coordinating aid for Ukraine from the U.S., ensuring a stable support mechanism going forward. The U.S. also believes that large-scale sanctions have been more effective politically than designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
