IAEA Vehicle Attacked by Drone Near Nuclear Facility
A drone struck a vehicle belonging to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) while it was on its way to the occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear facility in Ukraine. The incident happened on December 10.
The IAEA is trying to prevent a nuclear accident at the plant, which was taken over by Russia in March 2022. The agency has been working with Ukraine since February 2022 to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities in the country.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called the attack an “unacceptable” act against staff who are trying to prevent a nuclear accident.
No one was hurt in the drone strike, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it was clear that Russia knew what they were targeting. He accused Russia of disregarding international law and institutions.
Zelenskyy called for a strong reaction from the IAEA and other countries to this incident. The president emphasized the importance of monitoring nuclear safety, especially at critical facilities like the Zaporizhzhia plant.
The IAEA has faced challenges in accessing parts and fuel needed to keep the plant running safely. This latest attack highlights these difficulties and raises concerns about Russia’s intentions at the facility.
