According to independent Russian media outlet Proekt, President Vladimir Putin stopped visiting his residence at Sochi because of concerns about potential drone attacks.
Putin hasn’t been to the Bocharov Ruchey home since March, despite spending at least 30 of his days there every year since its renovation in 2014 for the Sochi Olympics.
Proekt’s report suggests that the Russian president “felt a danger to his physical security” after multiple drone strikes targeted Sochi in 2023. Proekt reported that a source close to Putin confirmed the theory.
This concern also led Putin to abandon his tradition of celebrating Alina Kabayeva’s birthday at his Black Sea residence, his longtime girlfriend and the alleged mom of his two sons.
The outlet also revealed that the main structure of the Bocharov Ruchey Residence was demolished in the early part of this year and new construction is underway.
The residence, once a popular retreat for Soviet leaders, has been used by Putin to host high-level meetings during his presidency, including an important summit with U.S. president George W. Bush.
