Russian Drone Attack Kills Ukrainian Scientists in Their Sleep
On January 1, 2025, a Russian drone attack on Kyiv killed two prominent scientists, Dr. Ihor Zyma and his wife, Dr. Olesia Sokur.
The couple was sleeping at home when the drone struck their house. They were killed along with their cat. The attack happened despite Ukrainian Air Defense intercepting most of the drones launched by Russia.
In total, 111 drones were launched on Ukraine that morning. Most of them were shot down, but some debris fell in two districts of Kyiv. A fire was started in a residential building when drone parts hit it.
Two people were trapped under rubble from the attack. Later, officials confirmed that Dr. Zyma and Dr. Sokur were among those killed.
The couple dedicated their lives to science. They worked at a university institute for many years. Olesia was in charge of research and led a lab that studied biology. Ihor studied human brain activity and emotions.
Seven people, including two pregnant women, were hurt in the attack. The Ukrainian scientific community is mourning the loss of Dr. Zyma and Dr. Sokur. They had dedicated their lives to understanding the human brain.
