Russian Reporter Killed in Drone Strike
A Russian state newspaper, Izvestia, says one of its freelance reporters was killed in a drone strike near Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. The city is occupied by Russian forces.
Alexander Martemyanov was traveling with other media workers when the vehicle they were in was hit. He died as a result of the attack. Four other journalists were injured.
According to Izvestia, the group was returning from reporting on shelling in the nearby city of Horlivka. The incident has been described as a deliberate murder by Russian officials.
The Ukrainian government has not commented on the attack. However, Moscow’s foreign ministry has accused Ukraine’s military of targeting Martemyanov and his colleagues.
This is not the first time Martemyanov was targeted. He was wounded last year in a separate Ukrainian attack. Despite this, he continued to work as a journalist.
The International Federation of Journalists says at least 21 journalists have been killed in Ukraine since Moscow’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
