The regional governor announced on Saturday that the Russian invasion has wiped out an entire city in eastern Ukraine.
“Russian-backed Separatists claimed to have captured Volnovakha on Friday.” The Times reports that “days of heavy bombardment by air and ground artillery attacks destroyed much of the small, but strategically important city with 21,000 residents.”
Social media videos showed Russian soldiers and armored cars in the city surrounded by burned-out buildings.
Pavlo Kyrylenko said that most of the civilians who lived there had managed to flee before they arrived.
“Volnovakha and its infrastructure as a whole no longer exist,” he told Ukrainian television channel Direct.
On Saturday, Russia bombarded cities in Ukraine, including Mariupol, which is located in the south. It also shelled the outskirts and the capital, Kyiv.
