Radiy Khabirov said that a Ukrainian drone had struck an oil refinery located in the city Ufa, in Russia‘s Bashkortostan republic.
Khabirov claimed that three Ukrainian drones crashed within the oil refinery’s facility, one of which fell on the refinery. Khabirov said that the drone caused minimal damage and no injuries were reported.
The Kyiv Independent is unable to verify the claims made by the official, and Ukraine has yet to comment on the alleged incident.
It appears that this is only the second time since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, that Ukrainian drones have attacked facilities in Bashkortostan, which is located 1,500 km from the border.
On May 9, a Ukrainian State Security Service source told the Kyiv Independent a long-range SBU drone had attacked the Gazprom Neptekhim Salavat oil refinery.
It was not immediately apparent which refinery the drone had allegedly struck during the latest attack.
Ukrainian forces have launched a series drone strikes to damage Russia’s oil sector beginning in spring 2024.
The Financial Times reported that the alleged strikes occurred as Ukraine and Russia were reportedly holding preliminary talks about stopping attacks against each other’s infrastructure, although Russia denied being involved.
Since the beginning of the war, Kyiv has repeatedly tried to strike targets at a distance. In April, Ukraine struck production facilities in Russia’s Tatarstan Republic 1,300 kilometers from the state border. In September, Russian officials claimed Ukrainian drones had attacked targets in Murmansk Oblast located behind the Arctic Circle.
Ukraine’s Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said in April that the country has domestically-produced attack drones capable of flying over 1,000 kilometers, as Kyiv intensifies its efforts to ramp up domestic production of drones.
