Russian Oligarch Elected Head of International Fencing Federation
Alisher Usmanov, a Russian billionaire, was chosen as the new president of the International Fencing Federation (FIE). This decision was made at a meeting in Tashkent on November 30.
Usmanov has been involved with the FIE for many years. He served as its head until 2022, when he stepped down due to international sanctions. The sanctions were put in place because of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Usmanov was elected president again despite the opposition of some member countries. In total, 120 countries voted for him, while 26 countries voted for his opponent, Otto Drakenberg from Sweden.
There has been controversy over Usmanov’s return to power in an international organization. Some have questioned whether it is fair to let someone who has been sanctioned by the US and EU lead a global sports federation.
As president, Usmanov will not be able to work at the FIE’s headquarters or attend many international tournaments. He also plans to take steps to prevent further restrictions on himself.
Usmanov has been involved with the FIE since 2008 and was previously elected president four times before stepping down in 2022.
