**Russian Forces Accused of Executing 9 Ukrainian POWs**
Nine unarmed Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) were shot and killed by Russian forces in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. This was reported by the Prosecutor General’s Office on November 28.
According to their statement, four Ukrainian soldiers were captured during an assault in the Pokrovsk sector on November 22. After they surrendered, Russian forces reportedly shot them with automatic weapons. This brings the total number of executed Ukrainian POWs to nine.
**Violation of International Law**
The Prosecutor General’s Office said that the deliberate killing of prisoners of war is a “blatant violation” of the Geneva Conventions and is considered a grave international crime.
**Reports of Abuse Against Ukrainian POWs on the Rise**
Reports of murders, torture, and ill-treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war have increased in recent months. Most cases were recorded in Donetsk Oblast. Last week, two other Ukrainian POWs were killed by Russian troops in the Pokrovsk sector.
**Investigations into Executions**
Law enforcement officers are investigating 53 criminal proceedings over the executions of 177 Ukrainian soldiers. In 2024 alone, 37 proceedings were registered for the execution of 109 Ukrainian soldiers.
