Regional authorities reported that Russian forces attacked Shostka in Sumy Oblast overnight on October 19 with guided bombs and drones. According to MykolaNoha, the mayor of Shostka, one civilian was killed and 11 others injured in the attack.
Sumy Oblast is located on Ukraine’s border with Russia in the northeast. It is a daily target of attacks, and is just across from Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
The mayor reported several critical infrastructure facilities in Shostka, including two schools and a kindergarten, as well as multiple medical institutions and 28 apartment buildings.
The majority of residents in the region were left without water and electricity. Emergency crews were sent to the site of attacks and repaired the damage. Rubble clearance was almost completed by 8 p.m. on October 19.
Shostka is located approximately 180 kilometers northwest of Sumy, the regional capital.
In recent months, Russian troops increased their use of guided aerial weapons near the border of Sumy Oblast.
