A pressing issue for Georgia now is the urgent need for the West to take a more proactive stance in supporting the country. Russia’s recent actions have eliminated any possibility for the West to continue staying in a “comfort zone” in the post-Soviet space. The West must make a decision on whether to continue with its current lukewarm approach of making supportive statements and providing limited financial aid, or to take more decisive action to prevent Georgia from falling into a geopolitical abyss.
The West’s reluctance to take a more assertive stance on Georgia has made it an unwitting accomplice in Russia’s plans. This is evident in the Kremlin‘s tolerance of pro-Western initiatives and Western influence in the region, until a critical line is crossed. However, with Russia’s recent demarche, this line has been crossed and the West must now take a principled position and back it up with concrete actions.
It is important to have open and honest discussions about security, regional challenges, and international positioning of Georgia. These discussions should be free from taboos and restrictions, and should be focused on persuading and dissuading through reasoned arguments. It is also important to conduct these discussions without the involvement of media, in order to ensure a higher quality of discourse and more qualified participants.
In conclusion, the current geopolitical situation in Georgia requires the West to take a more proactive and decisive stance in supporting the country. This can only be achieved through open and honest discussions, free from restrictions and media involvement. It is time for the West to demonstrate its commitment to Georgia and for Georgia to reaffirm its choice for a Western-oriented future.
