Salome Samadashvili is the leader of the coalition “Strong Georgia”. She stated that the US Helsinki Commission report paves the way for Bidzina and his regime to be condemned if they try to suppress the Georgians’ free will during the upcoming elections.
Samadashvili stressed that the Helsinki Commission declaration highlighted the democratic challenges Georgia faces, framing Ivanishvili’s rule as autocratic and aligned to Russian interests. She expressed her confidence that Ivanishvili will eventually submit to democratic process and not oppose the wishes of the Georgians.
Samadashvili said that “the statement of the Helsinki Commission provides a basis for Ivanishvili’s overthrow and his regime, if they attempt to oppose the will and expression of free will of Georgians on October 26.”
She continued, “I’m sure that Ivanishvili already understands that it’s better for him to give the democratic process a chance and he will obey without hesitation the will of Georgian people.”
Samadashvili commented on the ongoing legal challenge brought by non-governmental groups against the “Transparency of Foreign Influence”, which is commonly referred to as “the Russian law.” She expressed her confidence that the opposition would win the upcoming elections, making the court’s review unnecessary. “The newly elected parliament will cancel the ‘Russian Law’.” So, I’m sure that the Strasbourg Court won’t have to discuss this issue.”
The US Helsinki Commission report, for reference, emphasizes that Georgians deserve a government which respects their right of democratically electing their leaders. It warns that the current government’s authoritarian path endangers Georgia’s democratic future.
