Protests in Georgia: Leaders Face Criminal Charges
The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, has spoken out against the arrest and charging of eight protesters. This includes leaders from the opposition.
The protesters were arrested on February 2 while demonstrating at “Tbilisi Mall”. The original charges were dropped and replaced with more serious accusations.
The new charges claim that the eight individuals attempted to block a strategically important object. This could lead to up to four years in prison.
President Zurabishvili says this is an attempt to silence critics and intimidate the public.
Thirty-one people were arrested at the protest, but only eight are now facing criminal charges. The investigation continues to find others involved in blocking the roadway.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs claims that identifying those responsible will help hold them accountable.
