Serbia’s Prime Minister Resigns After Protests
The Prime Minister of Serbia, Miloš Vučević, has announced that he will resign. This decision comes after two months of protests by students and others against government corruption.
According to the Prime Minister, his resignation is aimed at reducing tension in the country. He said he had a meeting with the President of Serbia this morning, where they discussed the situation. The Prime Minister believes that his resignation will help to calm passions and encourage dialogue.
A wave of protests began in November last year after the roof of a railway station in Novi Sad collapsed, killing 15 people. Protesters say the collapse was caused by corruption and poor construction work. Thirteen people have been charged over the incident, including a former Transport Minister who resigned shortly after the collapse.
The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, has commented on the situation in Serbia. She wrote on Facebook that the Serbian government is showing the right path today by resigning. She noted that this is how peace and public sentiment are taken care of in the country.
