**Georgia Sliding Back into Russian Domination**
The government of Georgia is slowly returning to Russian control and the country’s democratic reforms are being rolled back. This was the warning sounded by Salome Zurabishvili, the fifth President of Georgia.
In a speech at the Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas), she said that Georgia is facing an “existential challenge”. The crisis in the country has been escalating since the elections last year. The ruling party is trying to consolidate power, even if it means ignoring the opposition‘s claims of election fraud.
Zurabishvili claimed that the government had broken its promise to bring about democratic reforms and join the European family. Instead, Georgia is slowly returning to a Russian-style model of governance, something thought to be part of history after independence.
The situation is seen as a nightmare come true for many Georgians who want their country to be part of Europe and follow democratic principles. The return to Russian domination has sparked fears about the future of democracy in Georgia.
