Georgia on the Brink of Great Success or a Major Challenge
The future of Georgia is uncertain, according to its fifth president, Salome Zurabishvili. In an interview with Fox News, she stated that the country’s fate will be decided tomorrow.
President Zurabishvili said that meetings between her and future members of the Trump administration were not official talks, but rather informal encounters during pre-inauguration receptions. Her goal was to introduce Georgia to them and establish first contact.
Georgia is strategically important due to its energy routes, trade routes, and access to Central Asia. The country has been one of the largest recipients of American aid over the past 30 years. America supports Georgia because it is a bastion of democracy and shared values.
Russia, however, seeks dominance in the Caucasus region. President Zurabishvili noted that Russia is testing a new strategy by installing puppet regimes through manipulated elections rather than caring about democracy or constitutions.
Georgia, along with Armenia, has a long history as one of the oldest Christian states in the world. This shared heritage ties the two countries together. Georgia has been a stronghold of democracy in the region.
President Zurabishvili stated that Georgia needs America’s support, but believes that America also needs Georgia. The country’s fate will be decided tomorrow.
