Georgia’s Fifth President Salome Zurabishvili Speaks Out on Recent Developments
President Salome Zurabishvili addressed the media at a briefing, discussing various issues affecting Georgia. She highlighted the positive impact of foreign funding on the country’s economy and state programs.
Foreign Funding Helps Economy and State Programs
Zurabishvili stated that foreign funding not only aided non–governmental organizations (NGOs) but also helped the state in its programs and budget to a significant extent. The effects of this funding have yet to be seen, but they will soon become apparent across all sectors of the economy.
Legislative Amendments
The President spoke about recent legislative amendments proposed by the Georgian Dream party. She mentioned various regulations, including the dismissal of civil servants, which she considered an attack on society.
Dismissal of Civil Servants
Zurabishvili expressed concern about the dismissal of civil servants without valid reasons. Some were dismissed for expressing their opinions on social media, a violation of human rights. The President noted that 150 civil servants were fired from the Ministry of Defense in this manner, weakening state institutions.
Restrictions on NGOs and Media
The President criticized new regulations restricting NGOs and the media. She stated that these measures further limit freedom of speech and expression. Zurabishvili compared the FARA law to its usage in other countries, arguing that it is being misused to restrict external funding for NGOs and businesses.
Consequences of Isolating Partners
Zurabishvili warned that artificially limiting foreign funding would isolate Georgia from its partners and push the country towards closure. She also spoke about the High Council of Justice‘s decision, which she believed made the court appear phony.
Public Servants and Prisoners of Conscience
The President expressed concern for public servants who are being dismissed without reason and prisoners of conscience who face difficult conditions. She emphasized the need to show solidarity with these individuals in new ways.
Coordination with Political Parties
Zurabishvili called for stronger coordination between her office and political parties on issues that unite them, such as protecting human rights and promoting a free media.
