Salome Zurabishvili, Georgia’s fifth president, spoke at a rally on Rustaveli Avenue. She said there is no other solution to the current crisis except new elections.
According to Zurabishvili, a document outlining the conditions for the elections will be presented in the coming days. This document will show what needs to be done for fair and peaceful elections.
Zurabishvili believes that most Georgians do not want the country to be taken over by Russia. She thinks that people who think this is a good idea are mistaken, as they don’t understand how bad the Russian regime is.
The president said that she believes in the Georgian people and their desire for freedom, independence, and a European future. She thinks that new elections will take place and that the country needs to prepare for them.
Preparing for elections involves several key points. First, fair election conditions need to be established. This is already being worked on and a document outlining the necessary conditions will be presented soon.
Second, people who can supervise and monitor the elections need to be trained. This includes commission members and observers. The president wants an “army” of people to ensure that no one can rig the elections again.
Third, support needs to be secured from trusted partners to prevent election fraud. Our partners are now involved in this because they have realized that Russia is using new strategies to manipulate and cheat in elections.
The president is personally involved in making sure all parties work together to prepare for the elections. She encourages pro-European parties to participate and wants them to agree on a single program – the Georgian Charter.
This charter should include goals such as repealing Russian laws, releasing political prisoners, restoring an independent judiciary, fighting corruption, and taking steps to ensure these things are done within six months after the elections.
