Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili gave a briefing after the European Council‘s meetings yesterday and today.
The council decided to impose visa restrictions on Georgian diplomats. This is seen as a strong message from Europe, telling Georgia’s leaders to stop hurting their own people.
According to President Zurabishvili, this shows that Europe supports the Georgian people who are protesting peacefully against the government’s actions. The government has been criticized for using police violence against these protests.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said today that the message to Georgia’s leaders is clear: stop hurting your own people. She also mentioned that the United States has decided on sanctions against those responsible for the violence.
President Zurabishvili called this support from Europe and the US “the greatest” possible help for the Georgian people who are standing up peacefully for their rights.
