FDP leader Lindner demands a new election immediately, claiming Scholz’s obstruction to effective military assistance for Ukraine caused the collapse of the coalition.
The disagreement over the approval of the Taurus missile supply to Ukraine led to the collapse of the German governing coalition between Chancellor Olaf Scholz‘s Social Democrats (SPD), Greens and the Free Democratic Party. According to Christian Lindner, the FDP leader and Germany’s Finance minister, Scholz fired him on 6 November. According to Berliner Zeitung, Scholz was accused by Lindner the day after his dismissal of obstructing Ukraine’s defense from Russia’s invasion.
Berlin has refused to send Ukraine its Taurus cruise missiles for several months, despite Ukraine’s requests and appeals made to other Western allies. Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, reiterated last month that transferring Taurus missiles to Ukraine would be “wrong”, and trigger an “escalation”, implying a major war.
