According Reuters, German has called for renewed efforts to establish peace in Ukraine. He recently met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and they both agreed on the need for new peace conference that would include Russia in the talks.

In June 2024, Ukraine hosted delegations from 92 countries at the first Peace Summit in Switzerland. The event ended with the signing of a communiqué, in which leaders agreed on a framework based on international law to address issues such as nuclear safety, food security, and prisoner exchanges, with the goal of achieving comprehensive peace in Ukraine.

Andrii Yermak, President Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, announced that the second peace summit is expected to take place in a country, potentially in the Middle East. Sources also revealed that Ukraine is hoping for Russia’s participation in the talks.

Chancellor Scholz stated in an interview with broadcaster ZDF that now is the time to discuss how to achieve peace at a faster pace. He is facing pressure at home after his center-left coalition parties suffered significant losses in two regional elections last week, while groups advocating for improved with Moscow gained more support. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the new anti-establishment party BSW, both of which oppose military aid for Ukraine’s fight against the invasion, saw record gains.

In a separate incident, Germany recently arrested four individuals, including an assistant to a member of the AfD, on charges of spying for China. This has raised concerns about potential interference in by foreign powers.
