**Russia’s Drone Strike Kills Prominent Scientists in Kyiv**
A Russian drone attack on January 1 killed a married couple, both scientists. Ihor Zyma and Olesia Sokur were senior researchers at the Institute for Biology and Medicine at Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv.
Education Minister Oksen Lisovyi announced their deaths on Facebook. He also expressed condolences to their family and friends. Zyma was a neurobiologist, while Sokur was a doctor of biological sciences.
**Scientific Community Affected**
Russia’s ongoing war has had a significant impact on Ukraine‘s scientific community. A recent study found that 23.5% of scientists in Ukraine have lost access to critical resources for their research, and 20.8% cannot physically access their institution.
Over 18% of Ukraine’s scientists have fled the country due to the conflict.
**Russia’s Invasion Continues**
The Russian army has lost over 38,000 troops and more than 1,000 pieces of equipment since the beginning of Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Oblast. Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi announced this number on January 1.

The international community has condemned Russia’s actions. The US Treasury Department stated that Iran and Russia have targeted American election processes through disinformation campaigns.
