**US Senator Roger Wicker Appointed Chairman of the Helsinki Commission**
US Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) has been appointed as Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the US Helsinki Commission. He will serve for the 119th Congress.
Senator Wicker said he is honored to be named chairman of the Helsinki Commission. He believes that European security is good for the United States. The commission protects human rights, advances democracy, and increases economic cooperation across the globe.
The senator stressed that today’s challenges are urgent and needs a bipartisan effort to find a just end to Russia’s war on Ukraine, a stronger NATO alliance, and an international order that serves US national interest.
**Background**
Senator Wicker has been serving on the U.S. Helsinki Commission since 2009. He has consistently advocated for democratic values, the rule of law, and peace and security in the OSCE region. He was also a Vice-President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly from 2017 to 2024.
Senator Wicker currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and is a member of the US Merchant Marine Academy Congressional Board of Visitors.
