**Serbian Education Workers Go on Strike**
Serbia’s education system is facing disruption as part of the country‘s education workers, who disagree with a recent agreement between major unions and the government, have suspended work. This decision affects primary and secondary schools across Serbia.
The stoppage is led by the Independent Union of Serbian Education Workers, which was not involved in the negotiations that resulted in the pay raise for teachers. The union claims that classes will be suspended in about 35% of Serbia’s schools.
Education workers are protesting against what they call “poisoned gifts” from authorities and supporting student demands. A rally, called “Educators Stand with Students,” was held in Belgrade on Monday to show solidarity with students.
The recent agreement between major education unions and the government included aligning teachers’ starting salaries with the national average. However, not all education workers were pleased with this deal, leading to the current work stoppage.
The Serbian Prime Minister has insisted that the second semester must start on January 20, and warned that schools that do not operate at full capacity will face consequences. Despite this, students across Serbia held rallies in support of the striking education workers on Sunday.
