Parliamentary Commission Plans Stir Debate
The Georgian Dream party wants to create a temporary investigative commission. This would look into the activities of the government from 2003-2012.
But some politicians say this won’t be fair. Sergo Chikhladze, from the Strategy Agmashenebeli party, says only including representatives from the ruling party is not allowed. He claims that any investigation led by one party would not be legitimate.
According to him, laws and rules say a commission must include members from different parties. But under current rule, it seems likely that a single-party group will form this investigative body.
This could mean that the findings of the commission might not be taken seriously. Chikhladze compared it to two officials who declared themselves leaders without proper authority: Papuashvili and Kobakhidze.
The Georgian Dream party leader, Mamuka Mdinaradze, said a conclusion approved by parliament will go to the prosecutor’s office for further action. However, many are skeptical about the fairness of this process.
